Basalt

Basalt is a natural porous stone and therefore it easily attracts and retains oils, dirt, and other contaminants. Norstone UK recommends taking the necessary precautions during installation and handling to keep the tiles clean and then sealing all with a water based, penetrating natural stone sealer once installation is completed. Natural stone sealants have different characteristics so please test any sealant prior to application on a scrap piece of basalt stone or in an inconspicuous area.

Lava Stone
A textured basalt finish from the Earth's core! Available in Platinum and a darker grey Graphite.

Each Lynia™ stone tile unit consists of nine strips mounted on a thin base for ease of installation. Similar to any standard natural stone wall tile installation, the working surface should be prepared. The stone tile mats are fixed to the wall using a polymer modified tile thinset / adhesive and then grouted with un-sanded grout. Like most natural stones, our Lynia™  wall tiles are designed to be cut on a tile wet saw.

Lynia Grey Basalt

Lynia Corners

Basalt is a natural stone and the favoured finish for corners and reveals as you can simply butt the cut edges together as seen in the photo above; here we see the stone has been cut and the horizontal lines have been continued around the corner.

An alternative method for corners and reveals would be the use of tiling trim along all cut edges, basalt panels are 10mm thick and so there are a vast array of products on the market that would complement Lynia™ panels.

We have produced a simple Installation guide with pictures to allow correct installation methods are employed. We always suggest a skilled tiler should install using a wet saw.

The methodology should be followed as outlined in the following pictures and text.

Step-by-step Guide

Note: This process was completed with Platinum/Graphite Lava Stone in the Lynia™ range.

Picture
STEP 1
We recommend you apply LavaSeal prior to installation and grouting. Start by sealing the Lavastone panels with a lint free cloth or similar, one coat, when dry apply second coat.
Picture
STEP 2
Ensure that you have completely covered the surface with the first coat, as shown. Wait to dry.
Picture
STEP 3
Now dry and ready to be adhered to substrate, no colour change when dry.
Picture
STEP 4
Screeded substrate with 6mm notched trowel, a thin bed is required to stop any adhesive squeezing through the gaps when the stone is applied. The compressed bedding adhesive should be less than 10mm or less. Also recommended, a thin bed applied to back of Norstone tile as well.
Picture
STEP 5
Applying the Lavastone and using a grout float to pat it down on the surface to ensure full contact.
Picture
STEP 6
Fixed Lavastone waiting for adhesive to dry and then grouted.
Picture
Picture
Picture
STEP 7
Applying the grout, you can see why it would be impossible to avoid filling the holes and why it was necessary to pre-seal.
Picture

Step 8
Cleaning off excess grout. This is a much more simple process when working with a pre-sealed surface.

Step 9
The panel shows the visual difference with once section completed with light grey grout and the other done in dark grey grout.

IN SUMMARY...
With Lynia™, and other stone cladding panels requiring grouting, it is our recommendation that you pre-seal as above. This will make sure the grouting material cannot become permanently stuck to the main surfaces of the panels and makes the cleaning up process much more straightforward.
