While obviously being suitable for brick and block work, our natural stone rock panels weigh 65 kilos per m2 (75 kilos with Laticrete adhesive) and are far too heavy for standard plasterboard.
In the absence of a specialised product, we previously recommend the use of 18mm marine ply which was cumbersome and time-consuming to cut and install.
We approached James Hardie to see if they were able to offer a suitable product that could be warrantied. After extensive testing, the Hardie Cement Backerboard was warrantied to take up to 100kg per m2 for internal stone cladding applications. This was the first time that builders, renovators, interior designers and commercial tilers alike could use a Interior product that it is easy to cut, lift and install and carries that all important 10 year warranty. Available in 6mm and 12mm.
See also our revolutionary new Hardie Walling which is warrantied for external use and perfect for timber frames.

INTERNAL BACKER BOARD FOR STONE CLADDING
Norstone UK (www.norstoneuk.com) is the leading provider of natural stacked stone and stone veneers in the UK. When used for interior applications such as around enclosed fire places and feature walls, Norstone recommends using HardieBacker® Cement Backerboard for Tile and Stone.
Jack Jago, Director of Norstone UK, explains how the relationship with HardieBacker® came about: “We were having problems with those projects that have existing plasterboard and where people wanted to put the stone on the plasterboard. But this won’t work as it will pull away half of the time as Norstone is a natural stone; it weighs 65kg per square metre”.
HardieBacker® Cement Backerboard for Tile and Stone can hold up to 100kg per square metre, whereas plasterboard can hold up to 35kg per square metre. This is one of the reasons why Norstone recommends using HardieBacker® interior for their stone facade. Jack tells the story about a client who, three years ago, wanted to put Norstone on one of the walls in her kitchen. At the time, the client was advised to use a substrate that could take the weight of the stone but she believed it would be all right putting the stone on the plasterboard and proceeded to do so. “I received a phone call from the client about two months ago: “Oh my god, my wall is coming apart!”. So you see it does happen.”
Another reason why Norstone recommends Hardie Backer® is because of its 10-year limited warranty. There have been other tile and stone substrate manufacturers offering their products to Norstone with a warranty up until around 65-70kg per square metre. According to Jack: “After you put the adhesive on it takes you up to at least 75kg per square metre, so you need to have 100kg at the margin”.
When asked if Norstone has considered alternatives to HardieBacker® Cement Backer board for Tile and Stone, Jack replied: “The other option was to install marine ply, which is an 18mm product and quite thick. HardieBacker® comes in 2 measurements, 6mm and 12mm and they are much easier to cut than 18mm ply. Marine ply doesn’t offer any warranties, and we thought it would be better back up our work with the 10-year limited warranty offered by HardieBacker®.”
Norstone has worked on many commercial jobs using HardieBacker® and has recently recommended using HardieBacker® for a renovation project consisting of 114 pubs which is about to start. “We learned early on that for Norstone to be successful, and for us to really expand, we have actually got to be really mindful of commercial considerations, and that’s why we went to James Hardie”.
*Warranty is only valid when Hardie products are purchased from Norstone*
